There is nothing more festive than sitting down and making your own Christmas decorations and pointing out to friends and family that you actually make that!! These dried oranges are so lovely and fragrant they are bound to be a big hit.
You will need:
Large Navel oranges.
A baking sheet and a piece of baking paper
A sharp knife
String or ribbon
Foliage
Wooden beads (optional)
STEP 1
Choose several large, thick-skinned oranges. Cut the orange widthways into 5mm slices.
STEP 2
Cover the baking tray with a sheet of baking paper and arrange the slices evenly. Pat the slices dry with a piece of kitchen roll.
Bake in the oven for 2 hours at 80ºC. Turn the slices over after an hour.
Low and slow is the key. If the oven is too high the oranges will burn.
STEP 3
Allow the slice to cool completely. Poke a hole in the top with a skewer or a large needle and thread a loop of string through the hole.
STEP 4
Carefully tie a knot, trapping your chosen foliage inside. Eucalyptus, rosemary or a sprig of holly work well.
STEP 5
Finish your decoration by adding wooden beads to the string, tying a knot to join the strings and make a loop.
Alternatively you could string the oranges together to make a garland or they can also be used as festive pot-pourri.
